How far can an electric bike go on one charge?
Updated October 22, 2026

Most e-bikes are listed with a range between 30 and 100 miles on one charge, and a few claim more. The real number depends mostly on the battery size, the assist level you use, your weight and cargo, and the terrain. Plan for less than the listed range, especially on hills, in the cold or on the throttle alone.
Why the listed range is a best case
Sellers usually measure range on the lowest pedal-assist level, on flat ground and in mild weather. That is a useful maximum, not what you will see every day. Two sellers can also measure in different ways, so the same battery can be listed with very different ranges.
What uses up the battery
- Assist level and throttle: the more the motor does, the faster the battery drains. Riding on the throttle alone uses the most.
- Weight: your weight, plus cargo, a child seat or a passenger.
- Terrain and wind: hills and headwinds take much more energy than flat roads.
- Stops and starts: city riding with frequent stops uses more than a steady ride.
- Cold weather: lithium-ion batteries deliver less energy when they are cold.
- Tires: wide fat tires grip well but roll with more resistance than narrow ones, and low tire pressure makes it worse.
Compare batteries, not only miles
The most reliable number to compare is battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh), the energy the battery can store. If a listing only shows volts and amp-hours, multiply them: a 48 V, 20 Ah battery stores about 960 Wh. Between two similar bikes, more watt-hours usually means more real-world range.
How to get more miles from every charge
- Use a lower assist level on flat stretches and save the higher levels for hills.
- Keep the tires inflated to the pressure printed on the sidewall.
- Accelerate smoothly instead of using full throttle from every stop.
- For long days, carry the charger or a compatible spare battery from the same brand.
