Fat tire electric bikes

Fat tire electric bikes, compared.

Tires around 4 inches wide grip sand, snow, gravel and broken pavement better than regular bike tires, and soak up more of the bumps. The trade-off is extra weight and a little more effort to roll. Here is every fat tire e-bike we list, spec by spec.

What to check on a fat tire e-bike.

  1. 01

    Where you ride

Fat tires shine on loose and rough ground. If you ride mostly smooth pavement, a commuter with narrower tires rolls easier.

  2. 02

    Weight

Wide tires and big batteries add pounds. If you carry the bike upstairs or onto a train, check its listed weight first.

  3. 03

    Suspension

Fat tires already cushion bumps. Front or full suspension adds comfort on trails and potholed streets.

  4. 04

    Top speed and class

Some e-bikes are listed at 35 mph or more. Under most state laws, those are not e-bikes but mopeds or motorcycles, and they may not be allowed on bike lanes or paths. Each bike’s top speed is in the table, as listed by the seller.

Questions about fat tire e-bikes

What is a fat tire electric bike?

An e-bike with tires about 4 inches wide, run at lower pressure than regular bike tires. They grip better on sand, snow, gravel and rough streets, and they absorb more bumps.

Are fat tire e-bikes good for commuting?

They can be, especially on rough streets or in winter. On smooth pavement they take a little more effort to roll and usually weigh more than a regular commuter e-bike.

Can you ride a fat tire e-bike on the beach or in the snow?

That is what wide tires are made for: they spread the weight and keep grip on soft ground. Check the local rules first, since many beaches and parks limit where e-bikes can go.
